Uruguay | Cerro Largo | Estancia “San Miguel” | Blood farms for hormone production

In the late afternoon, we arrive at the estancia “San Miguel”, which is only 7 km away from the pine forest pasture. According to our information, this is where the mares are covered in spring (September). When approaching the farm, we observe two horses on a pasture, about 200 m before the entrance. One of them is lying on the ground. When the mare later gets up, we realize that she is extremely lame and it is very difficult for her to walk. She might suffer from a pelvic fracture and obviously needs to be treated urgently by a veterinarian or humanely euthanised. Moreover, the fetlock of her right front leg is heavily swollen and her hooves are severely overgrown and cracked. The other horse, a stallion, also has strongly neglected hooves with split ends. 

At the farm, the mares are kept in four holding pens. There is a black stallion on a large green pasture next to these pens. About 100 to 150 mares can be seen from the road, but it is possible that there are more horses on the other side of the farm. We observe the stallion approaching two mares that appear to be in heat. The stallion is lame on the right hind leg and his fetlock is clearly swollen. We note that two mares are lame as well and several are thin with their ribs easily visible.

Next to the holding pens, there is a wooden raceway leading to a restraint box. The mares in the raceway are frightened, which is shown by their rapid ear movements. There are four workers standing by the restraint box. However, it is impossible for us to observe what they are doing with the mares, because they are standing on the other side of the box. One of the mares is in full panic, she is obviously not used to human handling. When she is released into the holding pen, she looks completely disturbed and keeps running around.

Auf der Farm werden die Stuten in vier Pferchen gehalten. Ein schwarzer Hengst befindet sich auf einer Koppel neben diesen Pferchen. Von der Strasse aus können wir etwa 100 bis 150 Stuten sehen, aber es ist gut möglich, dass es auf der anderen Seite der Farm noch mehr Pferde gibt. Wir sehen, dass der Hengst sich zwei Stuten nähert, die offenbar rossig sind. Der Hengst lahmt auf dem rechten Hinterbein und seine Fessel ist eindeutig geschwollen. Wir bemerken, dass zwei Stuten ebenfalls lahmen und dass mehrere dünn sind.

Neben den Pferchen befindet sich ein Treibgang, der zu einer Fixierbox führt. Die Stuten im Treibgang sind verängstigt, man kann dies an den schnellen Bewegungen ihrer Ohren erkennen. Bei der Fixierbox befinden sich vier Arbeiter. Es ist für uns unmöglich zu beobachten, was sie dort mit den Stuten tun, da sie auf der anderen Seite der Fixierbox stehen. Eine der Stuten gerät in Panik, sie ist den Umgang mit Menschen offenbar nicht gewohnt. Als sie entlassen wird, sieht sie vollkommen verstört aus.
