Press Reports on the Court Hearing in the “Spiridon II” Case
The court hearing at the Krems Regional Court (AT) in the case of the livestock transport vessel “Spiridon II” has attracted significant attention both in Austria and internationally. Numerous media outlets reported on the civil trial, which dealt with the failed transport of nearly 3,000 cattle from Uruguay to Turkey organized by an Austrian company.
The case had already made headlines worldwide last year: Hundreds of animals died during the ship’s weeks-long odyssey, and many more suffered under catastrophic conditions on board. We had uncovered the case at the time and have now traveled to Krems together with the Austrian investigative platform “The Marker” to follow the proceedings in court.
The hearing in Krems is another important step in the legal resolution of this case—even if the focus so far has been primarily on economic issues rather than the animals’ suffering. If the parties fail to reach an agreement, the trial will resume in the fall.
