Open Letter Against Animal Transport to the War Zone - Media Reports
The “Times of Israel” and “Marine Link” are reporting on our open letter to the European Commission, in which we call for a halt to animal exports from the EU to the middle east. Together with 24 other organizations and the umbrella organization for EU animal welfare advocates, the Eurogroup for Animals, we are calling on the Commission to instruct its member states to halt the export of animals to the war zone.
The EU continues to export animals to the conflict zone. In the letter, we highlight the risks posed by military attacks in potential destination countries such as Israel, Lebanon and other states in the region, and cite specific incidents during previous hostilities in which dangerous situations for both humans and animals arose in port areas.
In the letter, we remind the European Commission that according to its transport regulation, animals must not be transported if injury or unnecessary suffering are to be expected. Animal transport to potential conflict zones poses a disproportionate risk to animal welfare and must therefore be banned. To date, the EU has not yet responded to our open letter.
