Iceland, stop the horse cruelty for PMSG

Call on Iceland to ban cruel blood farms with your signature

Our new investigation of six Icelandic blood farms reveals the systematic cruel treatment of horses in the production of the fertility hormone PMSG (Pregnant Mare Serum Gonadotropin). We have been documenting the cruelty on these farms for years, and the situation of the animals has not improved.

New footage from September 2024 shows how the semi-wild mares are subjected to severe stress and pain during blood collection. The animals are beaten, prodded with sticks and boards, and separated from their foals. The mares' heads are tied up in unnatural positions, which increases the risk of injury, especially in the animals' sensitive neck area.

In 2022, the pharmaceutical company Isteka was granted a license to produce PMSG for another three years. Following a complaint from us, the EFTA Surveillance Authority took action and issued a warning to Iceland. Due to infringement proceedings by the EFTA, blood collection for PMSG production has been considered animal testing in Iceland since November 2023. However, animal testing can only be approved if it is essential. Under pressure from Isteka, the Icelandic veterinary authority MAST decided that the company's license would remain valid until October 2025.

To the petition: Change.org

We want the torture hormone PMSG to be banned from production and use. No horse blood for cheap pork. The first step is to raise public awareness and put pressure on the Icelandic government.

Help us by signing the petition.

Support us and demand an end to PMSG production in Iceland. Now, just before Isteka has to renew its license, is the perfect moment for Iceland to finally ban the production of this cruel hormone!

Use your voice to show the Icelandic government that animal welfare is more important than the profits of a pharmaceutical company. Together, we can end PMSG production.
