Poland | Bodzentyn, Lagow | Monthly report March cattle & horse markets
In March, our team in Poland visited animal markets 9 times. Most of the horses brought to the market are selected for two dealers who buy animals in Bodzentyn regularly. Both belong to Italians. One company still transports horses to Italy. The other one has stopped and slaughters horses much closer, in Poland.
On the cattle market, the situation is different. Quite a lot of animals are bought by farmers for breeding. However, still a few big slaughterhouses buy cattle for slaughter every Saturday. This month we noticed 6 cows with overgrown hooves, 2 emaciated ones and 1 with injured leg. Our attention was caught by a lying cow inside one of trucks. She could not stand up. Veterinary Inspectors examined the animal. They ordered to transport the downer cow to the slaughterhouse in Lodz. The driver was informed that she must be killed immediately after arrival, without unloading from the truck. Our team noticed also that two of the traders tied the animals by horns on their vehicles. We reprimanded them, but they had no will to untie cattle. Therefore, we reported the fact to Veterinary Inspector. Unfortunately, in the meantime the trucks left the market. However, we documented their licence plates and we gave it to the Veterinary Inspector.
