Petition for a ban on PMSG in Switzerland submitted

In conversation with Christian Favre, Co-Head of Communications at the FDHA, our project manager Sabrina Gurtner explains why Switzerland needs a legal ban on PMSG.

We have taken another step forward in the fight against the torture hormone PMSG in Switzerland. Last week, we presented the signatures we had collected for a legal ban on PMSG to the department of Federal Councillor Elisabeth Baume-Schneider. Over 17,000 people signed our petition, sending a clear message against this torture hormone.

In the coming days, the Federal Councillor will discuss National Councillor Meret Schneider's motion for a ban on PMSG. It is important to show that many people – in Switzerland and abroad – support this cause and want to see a legal ban on the production, import and use of the cruel hormone PMSG.

On blood farms in Iceland and South America, pregnant mares have blood taken from them under cruel conditions in order to obtain the hormone PMSG. This hormone is used in industrial animal breeding – especially in pigs – to increase efficiency. Although its use has been banned within the industry in Switzerland since 2022, this ban could be lifted at any time.

Supported by 17 other organisations, we are therefore calling for a legal ban on the extraction, import and use of PMSG. Its production is extremely cruel to animals and its use also causes suffering to mother sows and piglets. A legal ban would be an important step towards greater animal welfare and ethical agriculture in Switzerland.

We will continue to run our petition until the National Council deals with the motion. Click here for the petition.
