Rome, Freising | EU training course on animal welfare during transport
We were invited to this course as experts to present the problems observed during live animal exports.
We are presenting the main problems on animal welfare during the second edition of the course on animal welfare during transport (advanced level). The meeting was held by the initiative "Better Training for Safer Food".
We are presenting some example cases of how the veterinarian competent authorities plays an important role in decreasing animal suffering.
In March (12th-15th) and September (17th-20th) the first and second edition of an advanced level training course on animal welfare during transport took place in Rome (Italy) and Freising (Germany). The two four-day training courses were organised by "Better Training for Safer Food" (BTSF), an initiative by the European Commission.
Attendants of the event included veterinarian competent authorities from different EU member states involved in official control activities on animal welfare together with animal transporters, scientific experts and organisers of training courses for drivers to get their certificate of competence for animal transports. During the meeting held in Rome (IT) and Freising (DE), the main problems of animal transport by road, air and sea were discussed with a focus on exports from Europe to third countries.
We were invited to this course as experts to present the problems that we observe during live animal exports. The goal was to promote a constructive dialogue among the interested parties, concerning the most controversial aspects in the interpretation of the current legislation.
We believe that better training for veterinarian competent authorities plays a key role in decreasing animal suffering during transport.
