Investigation: Exports of live animals to Lybia
December 2022 to July 2023 | Libya
For a year we investigate the export of EU animals to Libya. Because of the difficult working environment, we contract a Libyan man to investigate the transport, handling and slaughtering of EU animals in Libya. During this time, he visited three animal markets where the EU sheep are sold, a slaughtering site where the animals are slaughtered on the street, followed few transports from the port to the quarantine stations and searched for the waste sites where the remains of the slaughtered animals are trashed. Libya doesn’t have any animal welfare or environment protection legislation. By exporting EU animals such countries, we are sending them to unspeakable suffering, and we are contributing to environmental pollution as Libya has no system in place to manage slaughter waste and thus the water and the environment is polluted by it.
