In August, 400 malnourished and dying horses were confiscated in Ezeiza from the Onorato family clan, who is known to have been delivering stolen horses to EU-approved slaughterhouses for many years. The horses are now in the care of our Argentinian partner CRRE (Centro de Rescate y Rehabilitación Equino).
The authorities do not allow the horses to be moved to another location until the end of October, after all have been tested for anaemia. The horse rustlers are brazen. They continue stealing even though the horses are in police custody. Ultimately, only 258 of the original 400 confiscated horses remain. Around half of the missing 142 have died as a result of the animal cruelty, while the rest were stolen.
Following public pressure after a thief had pointed a gun at CRRE’s volunteers, the authorities have finally approved the transfer to a property of CRRE. The horses are now in a safe place and on lush green pasture.
